My first photo contest win: the EUSA Photo Competition
In 2014 I went to the EUSA Games in Rotterdam to do the journalistic coverage of the handball competition for the University of Minho. Our male team was the reining champion and the favorite to take the win. Despite an early, and surprising, defeat against the University of Novi Sad, the team went all the way to the final and avenged the loss, beating this time the Serbians by 25-20. I'm a great fan of the fisheye effect on the photos, and since I have close relationship with the players, when I was tanking the official photo of the podium, they asked me to take a selfie, like I did in the final of the World University Championship Handball that Portugal won (most of the University of Minho players were also in the National team). When I was selecting the photos to the contest I thought to myself: "Why not?", you know, we are in the "selfie era" and the photo had all the elements: the winners, the joy, the podium, the banner of the games, the mascote... everything was in harmony! After a while, I've received a phone call informing me that I had won the contest with the "Selfie" and telling that I had a ticket with all expenses paid to travel to Zagreb, Croatia, to attend the EUSA Gala. It was a great experience, a great honor to see my work recognized by EUSA... and a unique opportunity to visit the Tesla museum!
