This is a story that a Croatian journalist did about me and the sideline photos that I took during the last European University Championship of Handball. For every photo that I putted online in the main feed of the Facebook of the event, I wrote something funny about that picture, keeping that way the feed alive and with other things then just the game results.
Nuno Gonçalves is one of the two photographers who are covering European Universities Handball Championship held in the Portuguese town of Braga. We decided to contact the impressive Nuno after seeing his funny and interesting captions of the photos from the championship on the official Facebook page.
We contacted the 38-year-old photographer from Portugal via Facebook. There is no crucial moment of the championship that can escape his vigil eye. His inspirational captions of the photos give the posts of the official Facebook page a greater significance so that they linger on in the memories of the participants, who have, like us, noticed Nuno’s amazing work and effort.
Nuno Gonçalves’s work includes several different areas and they are all related to sports. Since we had the chance to get to know him, we decided to share with you some of the amazing talent and spirit of this Portuguese.
We have compiled some of the best moments from the championship to which Nuno has contributed with his descriptions. It is impossible to just scroll through the posts of the championship’s amazing Facebook page without stopping to look at the captions Nuno has come up with.
Tell us something about yourself?
I am 38 years old and I work at the University of Minho as photographer and a website administrator. Besides that, I am also a judo coach.
What significance does sport have in your life?
Sport is a major part of my life. I have a good job, thanks in part, to sport. Besides being a professional photographer, I’m a judo teacher and I do kickboxing as well. I train almost every day of the week and thanks to sports and to my job as a photographer; I get to travel around the world, meeting different people and cultures. Doing sports at my university, The University of Minho, was without a doubt a turning point in my life.
How were you selected to be the admin of the championship’s Facebook site?
The Facebook have several admins. I am one of them due to do that fact that I have to process and upload the photos at the end of each game. Since I am also one of the admins of the Facebook of the Department of Sports of The University of Minho, I have some experience that enables me to do this kind of work.
In 2012, during the World University Futsal Championship that we (The University of Minho) organized, I did the same thing. I tried to catch some funny moments and include the corresponding captions. That way we bring more traffic to the Facebook page, more visibility to the sponsors and it is a great way to keep the spirits up.
How do you get your inspiration for the posts?
Monte Fresco, one of the best photographers of his time, captured an iconic moment during the 1988 English Football FA Cup – Vinnie Jones grabbing Paul Gascoigne by the balls. During one interview, he said that he was “always looking for an incident that had gone unnoticed, something of the ball, something to make the reader stop and take a second look and think ‘I didn’t see that’!'”
Well, after I photograph the action moments and after I ensure that that part part of the job is done, I concentrate of those sideline moments and I try to select the funny ones, to give some extra emotion to the story.
How does it feel to be a part of the handball EC?
This is my six time being at a European Championship as a member of the staff and it is always a special experience! During the first one, held in 2004 here in Braga, I was the attaché of the female volleyball team from Rijeka and it was incredible! I made some good friends, one of them – Haris Pavletić, is now on the board of EUSA (European University Sports Association). He later invited me to work as staff photographer in the volleyball EC organized in Rijeka in 2007.
Working on an event like this is a uniqe opportunity to meet different people from different cultures and to acquire soft skills that can be very important in the future. If you are a student, you really have to be a part of the EUSA Games Croatia is going to organize in 2017. It is an exquisite experience!
I have a degree in Education and a French Bulldog!
It is a real shame that the championship has to end. Otherwise, the participants of the championship and we the journalists from the portal would continue to enjoy and laugh at Nuno’s posts and anxiously wait for a new photo with some hilarious and imaginative caption to pop up.
